Spooky fiber arts

After a busy week and weekend, Sunday turned into an “at home” day. I found fabric from Joann’s in my stash and got to work choosing a pattern: another bag.

Bags are awesome, and I’m probably obsessed with making them. Let’s face it: we can never have too many. They are also a great “go to” when I need fiber therapy and don’t have another project idea in mind.

The bag above is made following a pattern by Simplicity (9308). I chose to line it (not in the pattern), and used webbing for the straps.

Full disclosure: I do have another project. Last week I came across a YouTube tutorial (posted below) for crochet skulls, so guess what I’ve been making ever since?

These are easy to make, come together quickly, and can be used for MANY Halloween decorations. I plan to make a couple with glow-in-the-dark yarn too.

The pattern designer has ALSO posted a granny square pattern tutorial – requested by popular demand – that incorporates the skull! (you can find that here)

These skulls have inspired an idea for another office door wreath. My idea is fabric (like torn mummy bandages) around the wreath frame with colorful crocheted skulls placed strategically. Some fairy lights will add the perfect finishing touch.

In recent years, I have come to love crafting for Halloween as much, if not more, that the Christmas season. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s the lack pressure around gift acquisition. Plus, there’s less pressure to decorate – although many of us do like a spooky front yard. Overall, it’s a fun holiday with different activities, decorations, and less stress!

  • I did experience some stress of a different kind when I wandered into a store last week, pondering the purchase of a bag of Halloween candy. The sticker shock I got from the $20 price tag saved me some empty calories!!

Let’s hope that the retail madness that overtook Christmas doesn’t ruin Halloween. In the mean time, I will continue to enjoy fiber arts and crafting throughout the spooky season. It’s FUN, and helps me work through my stash (the yarn and fabric featured here were stash-sourced).

Next, I’m off to find an old sheet that I can repurpose for some mummy bandages. Purple yarn is on my list as well, to expand the color palette of the skulls for my wreath. I’ll stop by the yarn collection (aka my stash) to get the purple yarn, and will only need to find a wreath base, which may have to purchased.

Here’s to October’s happy haunted fiber fun!
