I built a light box

OK – “built” is a bit of a stretch. What I actually did was construct one with pieces and parts of things I had around the house, following what I remember from a website with some “how-to” instructions. Still, I’m pretty pleased with my efforts, the cost (basically a handful of change), and the results.

I had a Hungry Root box (sturdy), a box cutter, some white packing paper (from Dollar Tree), packing tape, hot glue, and a piece of white poster board (also from Dollar Tree).

I have a couple Ott lights, a clip on regular light, and some windows that have good sun at different times of the day. It really doesn’t take much more than that! I took the photos with my iPhone too, so no fancy photo setup required.

There’s a sense of satisfaction that while I could certainly buy a $75 light box on Amazon, I chose to make one with things I have handy and local. With all of the unsettling news about global tensions, the impact on trade and who knows what else; we may have to resort to more self-made solutions instead of the recently-learned default impulse of opening the Amazon app and ordering something that can be delivered “for free” in 2 days.

Constructing my own lightbox is in total alignment with my fiber arts activities – also things that I do with my own hands. Indeed, the satisfaction I feel from the accomplishment of the simple, but quite functional, light box is on par with how I feel when finishing a crocheted, knitted, or sewn item/piece.

The “magic” in all of this, beyond the construction with basic items, is that it looks like a bad arts & crafts project, with ragged edges and uncertain symmetry; but it enables photos that are clean, focused and near-professional.

There’s an important life lesson in this, I believe. Sometimes, we discount experiences, places, and even people, because of how they look at first glance. We sometimes judge things as “less than” because of that first impression, but we should take care to remember that beautiful end results can come from some pretty humble beginnings.

I will continue to experiment with this 1st light box, and will likely be making a couple more over time. I have some foam board that I want to try for my next one, with a black background.

Now, back to making more lovely things that I can photograph in my new piece of “equipment” !!
