Fiber in the wild

While walking in a new (to me) little shopping district in a town that I’ve driven past for years, I came across these crochet rounds on a fence at the back of a parking lot at a bank.

I had just visited an upscale resale shop, where I had a lovely conversation with the person working there, and purchased 2 pieces of clothing.

I then decided to take advantage of the nice weather and walked around the block, which led me to the crocheted decorations, shown above.

I thought about other similar creative decorations that I have stumbled across in the past and recalled the pairs I photographed while sitting in traffic on 5th Avenue in Pittsburgh’s East End, as well as the knitted wraps on trees in the Southside neighborhood.

I always wonder if these “yarn bombing” artists know how much joy their creations inspire when fellow crocheters, knitters, and fiber artists come across them in unexpected places.

With all the troubling news in the world today, finding things as simple and joyful as yarn creations hung randomly around in public places is a welcome breath of fresh air.

I am now inspired to look for an opportunity to participate in a group making these, and hope to find my Pittsburgh “yarn bombing” people and get to work, soon!

Happy stitching!!
